Helpdesk Search Help Search Functions
Torrossa offers three different search options: a basic, or "google-like", search covering one field only; a quick search using three fields available on the homepage; and an advanced search.

Search mechanisms
Searches may be made for keywords or phrases.
Where more than one term is entered without inverted commas, the system will search both terms using the OR operator; each term will have the same relevance.
Where inverted commas are used, the systm will search the two terms as a phrase.
To search for an exact phrase (eg. "rinascimento italiano"), inverted commas must be used.
A proximity algorithm is applied to searches for multiple terms (eg. Divina Commedia), allowing the search to be carried out also against documents which contain the terms in a different order (eg. Commedia Divina).

Basic or "google-like" search
The basic search field, positioned directly below the Torrossa logo, is accessible from all pages of the site.
The default is set at "All" fields; searches made using this default will cover bibliographical data and full text.
The drop-down menu allows the search to be limited to metadata or full text only. The algorithm used by the Torrossa search engine will show results according to the following order of relevance:
  1. Keyword in title field
  2. Keyword in author field
  3. Keyword in subject or publisher field and other bibliographical fields; keyword or phrase
  4. Keyword in full text

In this way, if the term appears in the title of document A and within the full text of document B, the result for A will be shown above that of B.
We advise using the "Full text" search field should you wish to prioritise the occurences of the keyword within the full text.

Quick Search
The quick search is included on the Torrossa homepage to offer users immediate access to the three principal search fields:
  • Full text - the electronic text
  • Metadata - all bibliographical fields (author, title, publisher, series, notes)
  • All - full text and bibliographical data.

Advanced Search
The advanced search option allows for searches to be made across seven fields, which may be selected using the drop-down menus.
The default Booleian operator is set as AND; users may select to use the operators OR, AND NOT, OR NOT.
By clicking the + key on the search page, users may view a second group of search criteria and combine the first search group with a second search group in order to refine searches.
Search fields may be cancelled by clicking on the x if not needed; the change will be saved for the duration of the search session.
Users may set filters to refine their searches, selecting parameters from language of publication, type of document and subject area.
The order of search results may be changed from the default "by title" to "by author" or "by relevance".

Search Results
Search results show the type of document available (e-book, periodical issue, part of work or article) and allows users to view the keyword in context for searches made within the full text or all fields. To view the context, open the window "show keyword in context" beside the document entry.
The record is enriched with details such as cover pages, abstracts, indices and colophons, which aim to aid users in the selection of those documents to consult or purchase.

Search Results > Facets
On the right hand side of each search results page, the results are shown in terms of facets. Using these facets, users may view documents grouped according to the following characteristics: type of document, language of publication, year of publication, author or subject area.

Search Results > Breadcrumb navigation
Each search results page shows above the results the steps taken by users to arrive at each particular set of results. The first entry, "Your search", shows the search term (eg. Calvino), and is followed by additional filters added using the facets. Each single step may be cancelled; the page will re-generate new results based on the updated search filters.
