Established in 2001, the Institute of History of Mediterranean Europe (ISEM) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) has its Head Office in Cagliari, Sardinia and research branches in Genoa, Milan, Rome and Turin. The Institute stimulates and supports research relating to Mediterranean Europe by focussing on a number of favoured themes: the shaping of the cultural identity of the European countries of the Mediterranean area from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era; relations and reciprocal influences amongst the countries of Mediterranean Europe and their outside projections; human mobility and migration, in a context of continuous material and ideological exchanges, including the Atlantic world and the Americas; the publication and edition, in traditional and digital format, of archives and all sources relating to the history and the culture of Mediterranean Europe.
The institutional programmatic publications of CNR edited by ISEM, that are offe red on this website, are two: the Book series Europa e Mediterraneo. Storia e immagini di una comunità internazionale e the journal RiMe - Rivista dell'Istituto di Storia dell'Europa Mediterranea.
The Europa e Mediterraneo examines the way in which Mediterranean Europe shaped his identity in the span during the Middle Ages to the present times. In recent times, however, the research moved from the Mediterranean overlooking countries relationships to the human mobility and migration outside Europe and this fact became a new and important area of scientific interest. Beyond 'history' as a change over time, the series studies the representation of this change, through cartographical, political, literary or artistic images.
RiMe is an electronic journal on studies on the Mediterranean. It does interact methodologies and critical paths in the human sciences and it is open to contributions of historical, literary, linguistic, philological, philosophical and anthropological character. The journal intends itself as an organ of reflection intended for a specialists, not to mention, however, themes and topical issues that can respond to the curiosity and needs of a broader audience.
